Tentative conference assignment for 2012-14

Well, the Arkansas Activities Association met this month to put together the proposed conference assignments for the 2012-2014 cycle that will be voted on the entire body in August. As of right now, Beebe High School will remain in the 5A East. As a matter of fact, the East is the only conference in Class 5A that will remain the same. However, Helena-W.Helena is rumored to appeal their being placed in the 5A Central and may petition the AAA to reconsider and to put them in the 5A East and switch Beebe to the newly formed 5A Central Conference, which includes schools such as Jacksonville, North Pulaski, and Pulaski Academy. There are 7 Pulaski County schools in the Central. We will know more in August when the full body of the AAA meets to vote on all of the proposed conference assignments. Stay tuned!

New girls basketball coach for Beebe High

Well, the monthlong saga, also known as the search for the new girls basketball coach at Beebe High looks like it is over. Greene County Tech boys assistant coach Greg Richey was offered and has accepted the job. Coach Richey has had a reputation of winning conference championships and has been a part of state championship teams in track and basketball. Prior to being at GCT, Coach Richey was the boys basketball coach at Crowley's Ridge Academy in Paragound. He then was the boys junior high basketball coach at GCT, where he led the junior Eagles to numerous conference championships. He was then promoted to be Coach Bowlin's assistant, where, in a three year span, he was a part of two teams that won the 5A boys championship and was on a runner up team the other year. Coach Richey will be bringing his intense attention to detail, as well as his daughter, who will be a sophomore at BHS, and will be playing under her dad. Let's welcome Coach Richey and his family to Beebe. I wish Coach Richey the best of luck as he leads the Lady Badger basketball team in 2011-12 and beyond.

Congradulations to Beebe High baseball players Griffin Glaude and Bryson Scott, along with Beebe High softball player Megan Harris for being selected to play in their respective All-Star games which will be held later in the month in Fayetteville. Also, congradulations to Badger baseball player Dylan Byrd, who will continue his baseball career at Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge. Griffin, of course, will be playing for the UCA Bears.

New Beebe High girls basketball coach

For the first time in nearly ten years, there will be a new senior high girls basketball coach. Jamison Ingram has been hired as the new Beebe High School girls head basketball coach, replacing Lora Jackson, who was transferred to an administrative position. Coach Ingram comes from Heber Springs, where she was the assistant to senior high coach Jamie Riddle and was also the girls junior high head basketball coach. Prior to being at Heber Springs, Coach Ingram was the girls head basketball coach at Quitman High School. Coach Ingram played her high school basketball at Sheridan High School. Coach Ingram will be officially hired at the next Beebe School Board meeting, which will be next month.

In the Beebe School Board meeting on May 10, the board transferred Beebe High School girls basketball coach Lora Jackson to the newly created position of Athletic student services coordinator. Beebe High School is taking applications for the girls head basketball coach position through May 24. 2010-2011 Beebe Badger year in review

Well friends, here is what happened during the 2010-2011 school year, as far as Beebe High sports:

1. The Beebe Badger football team, after starting off 0-3, finish with a 6-1 record in the 5A East Conference. The Badgers narrowly lost to Batesville 14-10 in week ten and finish 2nd in the conference. The Badgers would lose to the Alma Airedales in the 1st round of the 5A playoffs to finish the year 6-5.

2. The Beebe Badger boys basketball team, with 1st year coach Ryan Marshall, finish 2nd in the 5A East behind the Blytheville Chickasaws. The Badgers achieved one notable milestone, winning 20 games for the first time since the 1982-83 season. Beebe went 20-7 and lost to Siloam Springs in the 1st round of the 5A state basketball tournament.

3. The Beebe Badger weightlifting team fell short in trying to repeat as 5A state champs, finishing 2nd in the 5A weightlifting meet to the Greenbrier Panthers.

4. The Beebe Badger wrestling team, coached by David Payne, narrowly wins the the 5A wrestling title over Little Rock Christian. The Badgers won the title in the last meet.

5. The Beebe Badger baseball team wins the 5A East Conference title for the first time ever, goes 23-5 for their best record statistically, however, the Badgers fall short in trying to repeat as 5A champs by losing in the state quarterfinals to the Arkadelphia Badgers, 11-1. Badger pitcher Griffin Glaude signs a national letter of intent to play for the University of Central Arkansas.

6. The Beebe Badger softball team finishes with a 16-10 overall record, 9-5 in the 5A East Conference, good enough for 3rd place, and advances to their eighth consecutive state tournament, where they lose to Alma 5-1 in the 1st round.

7. Badger trackster Reece Totty competes in the Meet of Champs, where he finished sixth in the two day event.

8. The Beebe School Board approves the installation of field turf at Bro Erwin Stadium. The turf will cost approximately $680,000 with over $400,000 coming in private donations from the community. The project will start June 1 with a tentative finish date of August 1.

Hi there! Wow, has it actually been a year since I last posted on the blog? Yes it has. A lot has happened since last May, when the Beebe Badger baseball team won the 5A state championship. I will elaborate in a different post as far as what all has happened. I am going to try and better update. There's a lot that is going on as far as Badger athletics that I will talk about. On a personal standpoint, life is trying to get back to some sort of normalcy. We'll see if that will continue, but I'm optimistic. Hope you enjoy the blog.

Updated on May 25, 2010- I want to thank Russ Lindsey for letting me post these pics that he took last Friday at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville. Russ gave me permission to use these pics. I will give a short description of each pic, starting from the bottom and going to the top:

#1- The four seniors on the 2010 team holding the trophy and the banner, signifying the state championship.

#2- Junior Griffin Glaude, who struck out 11 and also drove in two runs, holding up his MVP trophy.

Badger fans, it is truly a great day to be a Badger!!!! The Beebe Badgers defeat the Monticello Billies 6-2 at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville to win the 2010 Class 5A baseball championship. Junior Griffin Glaude dominated on the mound with an 11 strikeout performance. He also drove in two runs on his way to be being named MVP. I will hopefully post pictures taken by Badger fans who attended today's historic game on here very soon! Beebe wins its first ever state championship in baseball. Congradulations to Coach Mark Crafton and the rest of the Badgers!!!

spring football practice

This afternoon, I paid a visit to Bro Erwin Stadium as the Beebe Badger football team was taking part in spring football practice. They were working on short yardage and goal line situations. There were a number of Badgers that I was very impressed with, but keep your eye on sophomore to be Jared Gilliam. He made some tackles on defense that really impressed the coaching staff. These Badgers are bigger and stronger and should make some noise as Beebe returns to the 5A East after a two year stint in the 5A Southeast. After practice, I spoke w/ former Badger Victor Howell. Victor told me that he is attending Arkansas Baptist College on a football scholarship and will also run track. His goal is to hopefully attend the University of Tulsa and maybe play football for them. I have a feeling we'll be hearing his name quite a bit over the next few years.

5A state championship game in baseball

Well Badger fans, Friday afternoon, the Beebe Badger baseball team will be trying to make history as they attempt to win their first ever state title in baseball. The Badgers, who are 24-7, will take on fellow 5A Southeast Conference mate Monticello in the championship game. The Badgers dominated Sylvan Hills, 9-1 on Monday night to advance to the title game. I spoke w/ Coach Mark Crafton via e-mail today, and he told me that these kids are pumped and are looking to make history. First pitch is scheduled for 2 PM at Baum Stadium on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. I will not be broadcasting that game, but I invite all Badger fans to make the trip up to Fayetteville. Go Badgers!!!!!

Greg Miller, President/CEO of NEARSports

That is a picture of Greg Miller, President/CEO of NEARSports, broadcasting at a game last fall. Greg passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. He was 55 years old. He is survived by a son, Chris, daughter, Lindi, and his mom. I had only known Greg for a year, but I will always be indebted for what he did for me, both personally and professionally. I still remember the first conversation w/ him. It was in the late fall of 2008. As many of ya'll know, I was not broadcasting that year, and was going through many changes in my life, personally. My wife had moved out a month earlier, and I was adjusting to life as a single man. I was trying to not only find some normalcy in my life, plus, trying to make some extra money broadcasting. I had read that NEARSports had been sold and I contacted Greg to see if there were any broadcasts in north central Arkansas. Greg contacted me and we spoke for 30 minutes to an hour. I sensed the passion in his voice that he had as far as broadcasting and also for his family. Before he and I actually met, he and I had many phone conversations. We spoke a lot about high school sports, about the Badgers, about Greene County Tech, but we also spoke about life. See, one thing that Greg and I had in common was the fact that we were both/went through divorce. I learned a lot about Greg the announcer, but also learned a lot about Greg the person. No matter how many hours we worked, Greg was always, and I mean, always there for his kids. He was so proud of his son. Greg gushed with pride at the fact that Chris was attending Williams Baptist College, a school that Greg was very closely associated with. He was also very proud of Lindi. I can still remember a phone conversation in which his daughter had some of her friends over and you could hear them in the background. I still remember the day that we finally met. A two hour drive to Paragould and then trying to find NEARSports office. I still remember that voice when I walked in the front door. There was no doubt that it was indeed Greg. I can still picture all the momentos that were in his office: the posters, hats, pictures, etc. Greg Miller was just as passionate about sports and family in person as he was on the phone. I think that's what I'll always remember about him. I still remember Media Day, when he and I did a live broadcast of Media Day 2009, getting ready for football season. He was so complimentary of the facilities and the football program. You would've thought he lived in Beebe. The last contact that I had with Greg was about a month and a half ago. I told him to get ready because both the baseball and softball teams were going to be in the postseason and to get ready to get the approval from the AAA. I don't know what's going to happen with NEARSports, but I'll always remember Greg Miller. He took a chance on a temporarily retired play by play announcer and put me back in the booth. He always took the time to talk to me and to help me, whether it was trying to get my first internet broadcast going correctly, or just trying to pump me up. He did a lot for me personally and professionally and I'll never forget him. Thanks Greg!!

5A state softball tournament in Wynne

Well Badger fans, the Lady Badger season has sadly come to an end at the hands of the Vilonia Lady Eagles, a team that Beebe defeated earlier in the season. As of this writing, I do not have a final score, but the game was called at the top of the 7th inning because of lightning with Vilonia leading 3-0. Beebe ends their season at 17-9.

5A state baseball tournament in Monticello

Well Badger fans, Coach Mark Crafton and his Beebe Badger baseball team are one win away from playing in their first state championship game as the Badgers will take on 5A Southeast foe in one semifinal on Monday evening. On Friday afternoon, in a game that was moved up because of graduation ceremonies for both Beebe and Greenbrier, the Badgers eeked out a 3-2 win over the 5A West Panthers. On Saturday, the Badger offense exploded as they defeated the #4 seed from the 5A East, Forrest City, 11-3. The 5A tournament has seen two #1 seeds going down in the 1st round, which included Magnolia, the team that Forrest City defeated in the 1st round. This is the first time EVER that a BHS baseball team has played in the state semifinals. It should be an exciting game. I will post an update as soon as I find out a score. I won't be broadcasting this game(See post on NEARSports), but I'll be following the Badger Express as they will hopefully play for a state championship next weekend. Go Badgers!!!!

Also, just a note to congradulate both track teams as they finished runners up in the conference meet down at Monticello. The boys only finished 13 points behind the 1st place team. Both teams will be sending plenty of athletes to the 5A state meet, which will be held next week. Good luck to the Badger/Lady Badger track teams.

Baseball/Softball update

Hi there friends! Hard to believe that high school baseball and softball is drawing to a close and for some teams, it means jockeying for position for postseason tournaments. For the Beebe High teams, it also means competing for conference championships.

For the Beebe Lady Badger softball team, this week was a bit of a letdown as the Crossett Lady Eagles pulled off an upset in game #1 of their doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Eagles won game #1 3-2, but lost game #2, 5-3. At the very worst, Beebe is one game behind conference leader White Hall, as their showdown for the conference championship looms on Tuesday. The good news, as far as Lady Badger softball goes, is that junior pitcher Megan Harris was able to come back from what was thought to be a season ending knee injury. With the rotation of pitching that Coach Eric Chambers has, Beebe has a good chance against White Hall on Tuesday.

For the Beebe Badger baseball team, their dream of an undefeated conference season ended in game #1 against White Hall on Thursday, as the Bulldogs won a pitchers duel, 1-0. However, the Badgers got their revenge in game #2, winning 14-5. The Badgers and Monticello Billies are now in a 1st place tie, with the two teams playing on Tuesday at Monticello which should decide the 5A Southeast Conference championship.

big week for the baseball/softball teams

Well Badger fans, last week was a huge week for spring sports in Beebe, especially for the BHS baseball team. On Tuesday evening, the Badgers went down to Sherwood to Sylvan Hills and pulled off the biggest doubleheader sweep in BHS baseball history, by defeating Sylvan Hills 13-3 and 10-2. With the sweep, the Badgers may have inched closer to another first for Beebe baseball, a conference championship. Also with the sweep, the Badgers tied the most wins in school history with 17. On Thursday, Beebe defeated Lonoke in a non conference matchup 9-4 to move their record to 18-2. Also on Thursday, Monticello, whom the Badgers were tied in 1st place with, split a doubleheader, so now the Billies, who host the 5A state baseball tournament, are now a game behind Beebe for 2nd place in the 5A Southeast.

The softball team also had a big day on Tuesday as they swept Sylvan Hills to remain undefeated in the 5A Southeast, however, on Thursday, the Lady Badgers were dominated by Wynne, 10-0, in a non conference matchup. Despite the loss, Beebe is staying on track to potentially win another conference championship. Tuesday also marked the debut of Lady Badger softball on NEARSports, as I broadcast game #1. Beebe needed extra innings to defeat the Lady Bears, 5-4 in 8 innings.

Well friends, baseball and softball seasons are in full swing and both of the teams at Beebe High School are off to hot starts. Eric Chambers Lady Badger softball team is 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the 5A Southeast Conference. It looks like it could come down to the Lady Badgers and the White Hall Lady Bulldogs for the conference championship. The first Lady Badger softball broadcast(barring weather) will be on Tuesday, April 13 when the Sylvan Hills Lady Bears come to Gilliam Fields in Beebe. Mark Crafton's Badgers are off to the best start ever in BHS history as they are off to a 15-1 start, including an undefeated start in the 5A Southeast Conference. The Badgers step out of conference play on Friday, April 9, as they take on the Cabot Panthers in the first Badger baseball broadcast on NEARSports this season. First pitch is at 5 PM, with pregame at approximately 4:50 PM. I will, of course, upload every game immediately, so that fans, players, and parents alike can enjoy all the great action. Now comes the news per BHS baseball player Dylan Byrd that the baseball Badgers won the Batesville Tournament today by defeating Searcy, Abundant Life, and Batesville. Congradulations go to Coach Mark Crafton and his baseball Badgers. Way to go guys!!

According to Beebe Badger weightlifter Scot Gowen per his post on Facebook, the Beebe Badgers won the Class 5A state weightlifting championship. I will post more information as I get details. Congradulations to the Badgers for this awesome feat!!!!

2010 NCAA Tournament(1st 2 rounds)

Folks, I know this post has absolutely nothing to do with Beebe High sports, but if you're like me, you've been glued to the TV for the past 4 days, watching the first 2 rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. There have been some great games and teams that have jumped up and caused some upsets. They include:

1. Northern Iowa- This school out of the Missouri Valley Conference shocked everyone by upsetting #1 overall and the #1 seed out of the MidWest region, the Kansas Jayhawks. Before this year, this school had only one NCAA Tournament victory and that came the same year that the Razorbacks made it to the Final Four in Denver(1990). These kids have ice water in their veins and can hit some clutch shots. I believe that the Panthers have a legitimate shot at beating Michigan State in the regional semifinals and could push for a trip to the Final Four. One note on them. They are a #9 seed and no #9 seed has ever advanced to the Final Four. Could this be the year?

2. St. Mary's- The West Coast Conference tournament champs have looked like a foreign team with 5 Aussies on their roster, but these kids can play! After knocking out #2 seed Villanova on Saturday, I'm convinced that St. Mary's could also push for a trip to Indianapolis. Their center is an Iranian-British player named Omar Samhan, but this guy is a game changer. Villanova had no answer for him inside. Watch out for the Gaels!

3. Cornell- Before this year, no Ivy League school had been to the Sweet 16 since Penn did it in 1979, which was the same year they made it to the Final Four in Salt Lake City. What they did in the first 2 rounds was remarkable, in dominating Temple and Wisconsin. These kids can shoot, play defense, and unlike a lot of mid-majors, they don't fold under pressure. Unfortunately for them, they get Kentucky in the regional semifinals and to date, no #12 has ever defeated a #1 seed in this round, but you never know.

The first two rounds of the 2010 NCAA Tournament reminds me a lot of the tournaments in 2000 and in 1990 in that there were a lot of upsets in the early rounds and double digit seeds went deep into the tournament. Could this tournament be just like those that I just mentioned? You never know. The fun resumes Thursday evening in prime time.

Well Badger fans, the baseball and softball seasons are well underway and there is a lot of excitement around Gilliam Fields, especially for the baseball Badgers. Beebe is 2-0 in the 5A Southeast Conference and unofficially, has a record of 11-1 overall. The Badgers are creating a lot of hope that last year's run to the state quarterfinals is just a taste of what this year's Badgers could do. Junior pitcher Griffin Glaude has been imposing on the mound as he has already thrown one no hitter and came close to another one in the doubleheader sweep at Crossett.

As far as the softball team, the Lady Badgers are also giving fans a lot of hope as they attempt to repeat as 5A Southeast champs. Despite being rocked by the Bryant Lady Hornets in the first game of the Benton Tournament last week, the Lady Badgers are getting healthy and starting to find a consistent offense as conference play begins.

As we get ready to end March and go into April, we'll know a lot more about the baseball and softball Badgers.

Busy first week for BHS spring sports

Well Badger fans, its been a busy first week for the spring sports at Beebe High School. Both the baseball and softball teams started their seasons this past week. I do not have any scoring updates for the Lady Badgers, but the Badgers have gotten off to a good start. On Monday, junior pitcher Griffin Glaude threw a no-hitter as the Badgers defeated Pottsville 18-0. On Tuesday, the Badgers stepped up to play 6A East Jacksonville, however, the Red Devils edge past Beebe 3-2. Then, on Thursday, the Badgers shut out Harding Academy 10-0. For the season, the Badgers are 2-1 as they get ready for the Jacksonville Tournament that is scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 6 and run through Thursday, March 11.

Beebe v. White Hall

Well Badger fans, last Friday was my first broadcast since dealing w/ flood damage, and after a bit of a nervous beginning, the broadcast went just fine. As far as the games went, it was a bit of a different story. In the girls game, the Lady Bulldogs used balanced scoring to defeat the Lady Badgers. The boys game was a different story as the Badgers came back from an early 9 point deficit to defeat the fourth place team from the 5A Southeast. What I witnessed on Friday night was one of the most impressive individual performances in Beebe basketball history as junior guard Devonte Young scored a season high 33 points, including 12 in the 3rd quarter to help Beebe in the upset win. I was extremely impressed with Devonte and in my opinion, with some help, the Badgers could be a dangerous team in the 5A East in 2010-11.

A strange beginning to 2010

Well friends, its been a while since I posted anything to the site. Well, there is a good reason why. On Christmas Eve, 2009, as a result of 9 inches of rain that fell in the Beebe area over the 23rd and 24th, the neighborhood that I live in flooded and as a result, my house was damaged. My house itself had 10 inches of water in it and my garage had 16 inches of water. That night, as a result of the fast rising floodwaters, the Beebe Fire Department had to come in a rowboat and rescue me and my two pets. I have been staying at my parents since December 24. I was not able to get back to my house til December 26. Its amazing the feelings that one goes through when you're involved in a natural disaster. Mine was shock, sadness, anger, pessimism, optimism, and everything in between. I have also been frustrated with the insurance process and I will talk about later. The good news is that the contractor will be starting the repair process on Monday, and it will take 4-6 weeks. I will try to post pictures of the before and after. Also, for those wondering, I will be back broadcasting very soon. My target date is the February 19 conference double header against White Hall at Badger Sports Arena. In either case, I will be posting again soon.

Well, last night, in the battle of US 67, the Cabot Panthers and Lady Panthers had their way with the Beebe Badgers/Lady Badgers at Badger Sports Arena in Beebe. In the girls game, the Lady Panthers used balanced scoring and saw three players in double figures as Cabot defeated Beebe 49-31. In the boys game, the Panthers ran away from the Badgers to win 57-28.

Well, last Friday night was the debut of Beebe Badger basketball on NEARSports radio and with the exception of a minor sound issue, the broadcast seemed to have gone well. Unfortunately for the Badgers and Lady Badgers, the games didn't go well. In the girls game, the Lady Airedales ran away from the Lady Badgers 76-40. Junior Payton Denson led Beebe with 14 points. In the boys game, the Airedales pulled away from the Badgers to win 62-40. Despite the losses, there were some positives that I saw, so hopefully, the Badgers/Lady Badgers will get better.

Well Badger fans, sorry its been a while since I last posted. I took some time off from the blog to rest up, plus, my day time job has kept me incredibly busy. Well, its the end of November that means the beginning of Badger basketball. I wanted to take this time to give you a small preview of Badger ball.

Boys-

Well, it seems like a million years ago that the Badgers were in the state tournament and came close to pulling off the upset of the tournament against the #1 seed from the East, Forrest City. Several talented seniors have graduated and Brian Martin has moved on to Greenwood and now, the Chris Parker era begins. The Badgers have already started things off with a one point win against Clinton recently. There is very little experience returning to the team, but one thing is noticeable: More height. There are five Badgers on the roster that are 6'2" or taller on the roster, including Cole Vanaman(Jr.) and Caleb Davidson(Jr.) who are both 6'4" and Matt Jenkins(Jr.) who is 6'3". Whether this will translate to more wins is anyones guess, but its nice to see that there is height on this Badger team.

Girls-

Its going to be hard to believe that Ty O'Neill will not be on the court for the Lady Badgers. However, there is a #23, as junior Natasha Penn will don the aforementioned number. Unlike the boys, there is experience returning from the back to back conference winning Lady Badgers. Seniors Danna Jackson and Geneshia Edwards, along with Junior Amanda Wheeler return. This Lady Badger team will not score the points like last years team did, but hopefully, they will be a tough team defensively and will contend for a playoff spot in Beebe's last season in the 5A Southeast.

Well Badger fans, conference play is finally here. The Badgers will travel to Crossett to take on the Eagles in the 5A Southeast Conference opener for both teams. Crossett is coached by Greg Johnson, who formerly coached at Hamburg, while Beebe Coach John Shannon was an assistant at Crossett from 1991-1994. This is a huge game for both teams, as the winner gets a bit of a leg up in the conference race. This game is also important for Beebe as the Badgers have started out 0-3 and a win will do a lot to boost the confidence of these young Badgers. Don't forget, we'll start our broadcast with our weekly coaches show, Countdown to Kickoff, starting at approximately 6:15 or 6:20 and then DJ Jones and I will have live pregame and then we'll have the kickoff at 7 PM between the Badgers and the Crossett Eagles.

week three- Vilonia at Beebe, Sept. 18, 2009

Well friends, it was another tough night for the Beebe Badgers as they fought hard, but suffer their third loss in as many games as the Vilonia Eagles used their smashmouth Double Wing offense to defeat the Badgers 35-24 at Bro Erwin Stadium on Friday night. The Eagles got things started with a touchdown run by Vilonia QB Eric Ebemeyer. Then the Eagles got another score to go up 14-0 in the 2nd quarter. However, the Badgers would strike back on a 27 yard run by quarterback Scot Gowen and with the made two point conversion, Beebe was with 14-8, however, on the ensuing kickoff, Vilonia HB James Sax returns the kickoff 55 yards for the touchdown, however, on the return, there was some pushing and shoving involving Beebe and Vilonia players. It was 21-8 at halftime, however, the Badgers would come out in the 2nd half with more energy. BHS senior fullback Adam Griffis scored the first of his two touchdowns and with the two point conversion, the Badgers were within 21-16, however, the Eagles would once again score and make the score 28-16. The Badgers were not through as Scot Gowen would complete his only pass of the night, a 60 yard pass to senior Charles Latture who was dragged down at the Vilonia 1 yard line. Griffis ran it in and with the two point conversion, the Badgers were within 28-24, however, the Eagles tacked on another touchdown to make the final score 35-24. The Badgers had 303 yards of total offense, with 243 coming on the ground. Gowen led the Badgers with 101 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Griffis added 80 yards rushing.

week two- Beebe at Lonoke, Sept. 11, 2009

Well Badger fans, this season isn't starting out so hot. In the annual "Battle of Highway 31", the Lonoke Jackrabbits used an unbelievable running attack and an elusive quarterback to outlast the Beebe Badgers, 40-30 at Abrams Stadium in Lonoke. Just like last week, the Badgers did have an early lead in the 1st half, but the combination of the Lonoke running game, led by senior Brandon Smith, and the passing duo of Michael Nelson to Todd Hobson was just too much for the Badgers to overcome. Smith broke the backs of the Badger defense with a 65 yard touchdown run on the 1st play of the 2nd half, while the Nelson-Hobson duo connected for three touchdowns. However, there were some positives, most notably, senior fullback Adam Griffis. Griffis scored two touchdowns and had a career night rushing, with 158 yards rushing. Reece Totty continued his great play on defense, actually earning defensive player of the game honors. It was a nightmare game for quarterback Scot Gowen, who despite throwing a touchdown pass, also threw three interceptions. The Badgers will have one more non-conference game to work on their weaknesses as the Vilonia Eagles come to town Friday night for the annual "Battle of Highway 64" showdown.

thoughts about the NFL

Well football fans, the NFL has ended its preseason and this Thursday, will start the first game of what they call "kickoff weekend". I can't wait and plan to watch as much NFL as I can. I would like to share a few thoughts about the preseason and the offseason as we get ready to start the 2009 NFL season:

1. Obviously the big story was the reinstatement of Michael Vick to the league. A lot of dog owners I know aren't happy that he's getting to play again. I do believe in giving a second chance to someone. Hopefully, he'll take advantage of this 2nd chance. I know the Eagles are excited to have his play-making abilities. One person that isn't happy about Vick joining the Eagles is A.J. Feeley. He's been with the Eagles a long time and this past weekend, he was cut. By the end of the season, we'll know if this experiment worked.

2. A lot of former Razorbacks were cut by teams. Andrew Davie and Marcus Monk were cut by the Carolina Panthers just to name a couple. I didn't think that Davie would have much of a shot, but I thought Monk had a decent shot to make the roster. The Panthers are in need of tall, athletic receivers. Its obvious that Monk's knee injury suffered before the start of his senior season at Arkansas really was worse than Houston Nutt let on. Other former Hogs let go were DeCori Birmingham, Jamar Love, and Jose Valdez. Hopefully, those guys will latch on w/ other teams.

3. Another big story was Brett Favre unretiring again and signing with the Minnesota Vikings. Its obvious that Brett just can't leave the game. At 40 though, he is better than a lot of 30ish quarterbacks. One rumor coming out of Minnesota this past week was that the Vikings were shopping Tarvaris Jackson around. Honestly, I never thought that he was a starting quarterback. He couldn't cut it at Arkansas, but had a decent career at Alabama State. Only time will tell on this one.

4. If you're an offensive coordinator, you better do your job and get results. The Bills, Chiefs, and Buccaneers all fired their offensive coordinator's BEFORE the season began. Wow!!! I bet they'll be some head coaches on the hot seat towards the end of the season. It certainly is all about what you did for me lately.

Well, Friday night was certainly not what Badger fans were hoping for.........a win. However, despite the loss, there are positives that one can draw from the loss to Greenbrier. For one, Adam Griffis proved that he could play fullback. Griffis, who rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown against Greenbrier, worked very hard in the offseason, ran harder and better in the second half. Also, Victor Howell, one of the tailbacks in Coach Shannon's Dead T offense, electrified the crowd with a 68 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter, despite nearly being pushed out of bounds 15 yards from the goaline. Griffis, who was the NEARSports/Badger Sports Network's defensive player of the game, played like a monster in the 2nd half on defense. Tyler Ratz got a sack on Greenbrier sophomore quarterback Niel Burcham, who lit up the Badger defense. Scot Gowen, in his first start at quarterback, did a solid job of moving the offense up and down the field. Gowen also had a 66 yard run in the 1st half to help set up Beebe's first score. The rain did hold off for the game and the crowd was awesome, especially on the Greenbrier side. What will the future hold for both teams? Who knows, but both teams are young and can only go up.

Well, week two for the Badgers is the annual battle of Highway 31 between the Badgers and the Lonoke Jackrabbits. Lonoke(1-0), is coming off a big win over Pulaski Robinson while the Badgers(0-1) are coming off a tough loss against Greenbrier. The Jackrabbits have a new coach in Doug Bost and are hoping to continue their early season momentum. The Badgers are looking to rebound off of their loss. What will happen? Its anyone's guess, but when it comes to Lonoke and Beebe, both teams will leave everything on the field.

Badger scrimmage

Well fans, if you went to the Beebe/Searcy scrimmage on Tuesday night, you saw a very competitive scrimmage. The Searcy Lions, who have won a combined three games since 2005, look much improved with new Head Coach Tim Harper. I was very impressed with the linebackers, who can really hit. Searcy has a sophomore quarterback who wore #7, who is extremely athletic. This young man can really make some plays. As far as the Beebe Badgers side of the scrimmage, I saw a lot of positive things. First of all, the quarterback position is in good hands with junior Scot Gowen. Scot did a good job with the handoffs and even occasionally running with the football. I was really impressed with junior linebacker Dalton Wallace. He absolutely flew to the football. I was also impressed with junior tight end/lineman Reece Totty. He made some nice plays on both sides of the ball. Spencer Forte did an outstanding job in the secondary. Also, Cody Lawson and Bradley Gann also made some excellent plays. If there was a score kept, Beebe would've won the scrimmage, but it was extremely competitive. There was an excellent crowd at Bro Erwin Stadium, especially on the visitor's side of the stadium. Now, its time to prepare for the season opener against Greenbrier.

Beebe Badgers v. Searcy Lions(scrimmage)

Well, football fans, its hard to believe that the season is less than two weeks away. Although the regular season starts next Friday, the Badgers will start things with their scrimmage against the Searcy Lions Tuesday night at Bro Erwin Stadium in Beebe. It will begin with the junior high scrimmage at 5:30 and then the senior high scrimmage will begin at approximately 7 PM. This is a new start for the Searcy football program as Tim Harper, long time Des Arc, begins his first year at Searcy as the Lions try to do something that they haven't done since 2003.........and that is to make the playoffs. That year, the Lions were actually 5-5-1. The last time Searcy had a non-losing season was 2002, which was their first year in the old AAAA East. That year, the Lions were 7-3, but lost out on a playoff spot due to points. Coach Harper is bringing his Shotgun Option to Searcy. Whether this new offensive system will work remains to be seen, but he has brought new life into the Searcy program. The Beebe coaches will be doing some evaulating themselves as they look to fill some positions after losing 15 seniors to graduation in May. One position that is set is the quarterback position as junior Scot Gowen is the unquestioned starter at that position. The Badgers have 45 players on their roster and all 45 will be key in the Badgers making the playoffs for a third year in a row. The weather is forecast to be clear and nice, not hot like it usually is in August. Hopefully, there will be a big crowd at Bro Erwin for this scrimmage. We'll see ya there!!

Well, I attended my first Beebe High football Media Day as a broadcaster, and I have to say that for the most part, it was a smashing success. The sunny skies gave way to some cloudy skies that did threaten rain, but it never materialized. Despite a few technical glitches, I really believe that this Media Day was a success. It was a neat atmosphere, with coaches, parents, players, and other media around. It definitely had a bit of a small college feel to it. My first interviewee was Justin Shipp, Beebe High Athletic Trainer. Justin was there with his wonderful wife, Becky. Justin has been with Beebe since 2007 and now has an enlarged training area to work with, thanks to the expansion that was recently finished to the fieldhouse. Justin has worked very hard, not only to get that expansion, but also to train the kids that he works with. My personal opinion is that I hope he's around for a long time here at Beebe. The next person that I interviewed was senior defensive back Spencer Forte. I was extremely impressed, not only with how polite Spencer is, but how humble he is. As a junior, Spencer had 4 interceptions on his way to being named All-State. His cousin, Ty Forte, played with Cedric Cobbs at LR Fair in the late 90s and won a state championship. He then went on to play at Arkansas State. My next interviewee was junior quarterback Scot Gowen. Scot reminds me a lot of Tom Brady and not just because he also wears #12. Scot sounds a lot like Brady and has the same cool, confident demeanor that Brady has. Like Spencer, Scot is very polite and humble. Those two young men will do very good for themselves. Next was Beebe Senior High Head Football Coach John Shannon. Coach Shannon was very optimistic and very complimentary about his squad of 46 Badgers. He told me that their biggest strength was the skill players, especially the secondary. Last, but not least, was Beebe Junior High Head Coach Richard Clevinger. I know he was nervous, but I appreciated him talking to me. He feels that his backfield, which returns all three starters at halfback and fullback, is the strength of his team. He seemed more than optimistic about Beebe's chances of competing for the River City Conference North Division title. All in all, it was a good afternoon. I enjoyed myself and look forward to making this an annual event.

Interesting facts

Well, I learned some interesting facts while at the saturday football practice. I was visiting with Steve Gowen, who is the father of Beebe QB Scot Gowen, and I learned some interesting things. Steve, who graduated from BHS in 1982, played under former Beebe coaches Doug Scheel and Mickey Billingsley. He was a QB himself. He and I talked about some of the history of the Beebe program during the late 1970's and early 1980's. For example, in 1979, the Badgers finished 8-2 and were conference runner ups, however, at that time, only 8 teams went to the playoffs from each classification and those were conference champs. The two losses that Beebe had were to McCrory and Pulaski Oak Grove, who coincidentially, played for the AA state championship that same year. Also, in 1980, the Badgers were co-champs of the 2AA South, however, they did get to go to the playoffs. After defeating Corning in an epic three overtime thriller, the Badgers faced Greenbrier, a team they had blown out earlier in the year. However, the quarterfinals of the AA playoffs were a different story as the Panthers ended the Badgers season 16-7. Doug Scheel would end up leaving Beebe for Booneville where he helped lead the Bearcats to a state championship while there. Going back to Scot, I saw some nice things out of the junior at practice. Not only is he a good leader, but he's also a good punter. The Badgers worked on special teams today. I also had the pleasure of talking to Scot for a few minutes after practice today. He is a very polite, confident young man. I bet if you ask most coaches, those are the qualities that they are looking for in a quarterback. Another interesting fact I learned today, and the reason for this post, is that Steve and Scot Gowen may be the first ever father/son to play quarterback at Beebe. I was very impressed with Steve and his excellent memory, especially on specific plays and players. All that goes to prove that you learn something new every day.

I know that I haven't posted in a while. I am getting over a sinus infection, so it has slowed me down, however, I am better and very excited about the upcoming Media Day. Not only will I be there on Media Day, which is on Tuesday, August 18, but Greg Miller, President and Owner of NEARSports.com(www.nearsports.com), will also be there. Well friends, its hard to believe that it is now 30 days to the kickoff, at least as far as the Badgers are concerned, of the 2009 season. Things are going to get busier as the season gets closer. Two-a-days have already started and I will be attending the Saturday practice(which should probably start about 6 am). Media Day will be two weeks from today and the scrimmage against Searcy, which will be at Bro Erwin Stadium, is three weeks from today. I am very excited not only about the season drawing closer, but getting back in the press box. Stay tuned for more posts.

August 3- Two-A-Day practices start at 6:15 AM.

August 18- Media Day starts at 3 PM. All local media are invited to Pruitt Fieldhouse where all coaches and players will be made available for interviews.

August 25- Beebe Junior High will scrimmage Ahlf(Searcy) Junior High, starting at 5:30 PM, followed by the Beebe Senior High scrimmage with Searcy High at approximately 7 PM.

Well friends, it is now done. This process that I have been going through for nine months is now over and official. My divorce is official, signed and legal. I was wondering what emotions and feelings that I would be going through today. I can tell you this: I am not celebrating. I am happy that the process is over, but I'm not happy that it came to this. If someone had told me a year ago that by late July of 2009, that I would be divorced, I wouldn't have believed them. I have learned a lot about myself during this process. One of the things that I set out to do was to network with other men and women who went through a divorce. All the advice and good words that I have heard from everyone has really helped me to deal with these feelings that I have gone through. I would not wish this on anyone, not even my worst enemy. I am inviting anyone who reads this to comment, to give their own feelings, and to write down whatever is on your mind. I do want to thank not only my friends and family, but my attorney. I am thankful that my ex signed the papers and mailed them back as quick as she did. Not that I haven't moved on, but now, I can officially move on.

Random thought for July 19, 2009

Well, a friend who sent me a message on Facebook is the inspiration for my random thought that I'm posting. Today would've been my 12th wedding anniversary. For those that do not know, my divorce will be final next Tuesday. I was married for 11 years. I have been single for 9 months now. It is interesting what you learn in this process. Believe it or not, the gist of this post is not to talk about my feelings about being single or going through a divorce. It is actually to talk about what happened one year ago today.

From 2002 to July 19, 2008, I worked for Crain Media-Searcy. Despite the rocky ending to the 2007-08 broadcast year, I was very much looking forward to the upcoming season and the Badgers going into the 5A Southeast Conference. Unfortunately, I would never get that chance. On July 19, 2008, which was my 11th wedding anniversary, I got the call from the then GM of Crain Media, JR Runyon, informing me that I was no longer the voice of the Badgers. The phone call came at 1:30 in the afternoon and it was a 10 minute conversation. He never really told me the reasoning behind my firing and essentially just hinted at some things. I can still remember feeling the shock and the feeling of being really surprised after hearing that news. All of this from a man that five months earlier, put his arm around me and told me that I was "appreciated" and that Beebe sports would not be the same without me. I still remember the two people that I immediately called with this information: my then wife, and Coach John Shannon. Its amazing what you remember about certain things.

Fast forward to July 19, 2009. I think about what all has happened this year. I will be back in the booth as the voice of the Badgers on the Badger Radio Network/NEARSports.com. I have gone on several dates, and filed for divorce. A wise gentleman told me several months ago that I needed to start living my life day to day, to not worry about the past because you can't change the past and to not worry about the future because you can't predict it. I know it won't do any good to be bitter and upset about what happened a year ago. For some people, going through something that bitter is hard to move on from, but honestly, its the best thing to do. So, that's what I've done. I have moved on. I am very optimistic that the rest of 2009 will be at least decent. I am very much looking forward to football season. My last point: always keep your chin up and be optimistic.

On a sports note: two-a-days begin in about a week and a half. These kids have been working hard in offseason workouts and team camps. We'll see how they've come along since spring practice.

Special movie review

Well, I know this has nothing to do with sports or the Beebe Badgers, but most people that know me know that I am a huge James Bond fan. This weekend, I bought the last two movies I needed to complete my 007 collection: Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. I used to own Casino Royale, but I let my ex wife have it. I had never seen Q/S, so I bought and watched it this evening. Here is my review of it:

First, it is obvious that it is a sequel to CR, in many ways. One, Bond, is bent on getting revenge over losing Vesper Lynd at the end of CR. Also, some of the characters from CR come back in Q/S, including Mr. White and Felix Leiter. I liked the fact that both had expanded roles in Q/S. the character of M also has an expanded role in the movie, as we see a bit more personal side to her character.

I have to say that Q/S is essentially License to Kill(1989) for a large part, with the exception of a few details. Both movies have two Bond girls, both have Bond as a rogue agent, both take place in Central/South America, and both have strong willed dictators. However, in Q/S, the dictator takes the back seat to Dominic Greene, where in L2K, the dictator takes a back seat to no one. I can see why, in a way, that both movies mirror each other in a way. Both Daniel Craig and Timothy Dalton play a harder, darker Bond. Sean Connery or Pierce Brosnan would not have been able to pull off this type of character, or make this particular type of 007 movie work. Both Q/S and L2K also have agents who turn against their governments.

What I liked:

1. The end of the movie, where Bond finally finds peace with himself and the memories he has of Vesper Lynd. The necklace that Vesper wore in CR that Bond carried for the movie was dropped in the snow at the end.

2. The relationship between M and Bond seemed to get a little stronger toward the end of the movie, when M realizes that Bond was right about the Quantum organization. She defends Bond's actions during her meeting with the PM's aide.

3. MI6 agent Field's legs. Very nice. Fields, however, didn't play as big of a role as she probably should've had.

What I disliked:

1. The theme song, it was terrible!!!! It was probably one of the worst Bond theme songs of the whole series. This song will not do Alicia Keys any good, in my opinion.

2. The end graphics. They were too small.

3. The fact that the gun barrel scene was at the end. Although I'm glad they brought it back for Q/S, it should've been at the beginning, instead of the end. Hopefully, for the next Bond, it will be at the beginning.

My review? On a scale of 1(worst) to 5(best), I'd rate it a 2.5. I thought it interesting that it was not the only movie featuring an actor playing Bond for the second time(Roger Moore-The Man with the Golden Gun, Timothy Dalton-License to Kill), that the second movie was not as well thought of as the first. Hopefully the next Bond flick, due to be released in 2011, will be much better. I'd love your comments on Q/S.

Well Badger fans, it is now official! According to an e-mail that I got earlier today from Greg Miller, President of NEARSports.com/NEARSports radio, Badger Radio Network, an affiliate of NEARSports, will be broadcasting Beebe High School football, basketball, baseball, and softball this upcoming school year. I will be broadcasting Badger sports on BRN and to say that I am excited, is an understatement. Not only will it help publicize the Beebe School District, the community, and the athletic programs, but it will reach out to a large number of alumni and fans who live in other areas of the state, nation, and even the world. There are ideas being discussed and thrown around that will hope to make the Badger broadcasts the best around. This is an exciting time to be a Badger fan, whether you live in Beebe, Little Rock, or Australia. I will talk more about this in the next few days, but I wanted to share this exciting news with you. I am not only excited, but very thankful and grateful for the opportunity to once again, be the voice of the Badgers. My thanks to all of my friends out there who have helped me over the course of this year. You will not be forgotten, I can promise you that! Thanks again!

Random thoughts for July 4, 2009

Well, its hard to believe that we're celebrating another Fourth of July holiday. It just seems like yesterday that I was bringing in the New Year in the company of a lovely young lady(all good, of course). In two months, the 2009 high school football season will begin, but what will be different from last season is the fact that I will be back in the booth. Last year at this time, I had no idea that not only was I about to be fired from my soon to be former radio employer, but a month later, my wife would come to me with the news that she wanted a divorce. More about the latter a little later. Getting back in the booth has been the most normal thing that has happened to me in nearly a year. There are many people that I have to think for getting back in the booth. For those that do not know, there will be two radio stations that will be covering Beebe High sports this upcoming season, the yet to be decided FM station from Crain Media, and NEARSports radio. NEARSports(www.nearsports.com) is the only internet radio station in the state of Arkansas. It is owned and operated by Greg Miller, who is one of the announcers himself. Greg, a longtime banker, bought NEARSports from David Grim in September of 2008 and has embarked on an ambitious effort to not only make NEARSports better, but bigger. NEARSports has not only gotten contracts to cover small schools like East Poinsett County, Bay, and Riverside, but also has gotten contracts to cover Marion(6A East) and Greene County Tech(5A East). With the addition of Beebe, NEARSports not only is coming into the central Arkansas market, but is the third school that is 5A and bigger that will be covered by NEARSports. Not only will this be a little different forum, as far as the Badger broadcasts are concerned, there will actually be more sports covered. As of right now, potentially four sports will be covered. I'm personally excited about the possibility of covering baseball and softball, as those sports were very successful last season. Not only do I have to thank Greg Miller for giving me another opportunity to get back into the booth, but I also have to thank the Beebe School Board and superintendent, Dr. Belinda Shook, for giving the okay(the official okay will come July 13 at the next board meeting). I also want to thank Jerry Jordan, the Beebe Athletic Director, for giving the recommendation to the school board. There are plenty more people to thank, and I will do so a little later.

As I remarked earlier, my divorce will be final in a few weeks, July 28, to be exact. It has been a rough past several months, but I'm glad that there is finality to this. I can safely say that divorce sucks. Hopefully, there will be another lady in my life soon, only time will tell.

I just got my 2009 copy of Hooten's Arkansas Football Magazine, and as always, it is better than the year before. More color pictures, more articles, and always good previews of the state colleges and high schools. The coaches in the 5A Southeast have picked the Badgers to finish 4th in the conference, which I would have to say is pretty accurate. Monticello is once again loaded and primed to make another deep run in the playoffs. Sylvan Hills could be a darkhorse to push the Billies for the conference championship. Only time will tell as far as who finishes in what place.

Well, as we head through this hot Arkansas summer, I wanted to post some random thoughts concerning Beebe Badger sports and about life in general. These are just random thoughts that have come to mind.

1. How about those baseball Razorbacks?! Despite the fact that they lost to LSU on Friday, the Razorbacks shocked a lot of people in the college baseball world by advancing to the final four of the College World Series. It was truly a special season for the Razorbacks. I am not normally a college baseball fan, however, the postseason made me a fan. I'm looking for great things out of the Hogs next season.

2. We are now in what is called "the dead period" as far as high school athletics go. The kids and coaches are not allowed to have contact w/ one another. I'm sure the coaches welcome the break because they do put in a lot of long hours. The workouts will resume July 6.

3. Well, my divorce will be final in July. Its hard to believe that its been almost a year since that bombshell was dropped on me. I will post more later.

Beebe School Board Meeting

The next regular meeting of the Beebe School Board is Monday, June 8 at 6:30 PM in the Central Office Board Room.

UPDATE:

Monday night, the Beebe School Board decided to go with the Athletic Director's recommendation of using both NEARSports and Crain Media. The contracts will be written and finalized and officially voted on by the board during the July school board meeting. With NEARSports being voted in, this means that I will be back in the booth as the voice of the Badgers. I will post more later.

Here is a list of the sports and how the Badgers did in each sport. I think its safe to say that if there was a team of the year for the conference, it would have to be the Beebe Badgers.

Stunning news concerning the play by play announcer

Well friends, it has been an "interesting" last couple of weeks for yours truly. On July 19, I received a phone call from J.R. Runyon, the General Manager of Crain Media in Searcy. In the course of this phone conversation, I was informed that I was no longer the voice of the Badgers. Not only that, but I was also informed that the Programming Director of Crain Media, who is a Searcy resident, would be assuming my duties. I was not, I repeat, not, given a specific reason for my dismissal. Over the past couple of weeks, I have undergone a variety of different emotions. First, it was shock, then anger, then resolve. I want to let all of the Badger fans, my friends, and those who read this, know what happened and what I hope will transpire.

I have been the voice of the Beebe Badgers since 1999 and have worked for two different broadcast groups. In the nearly ten seasons as the voice of the Badgers, I have called 85 football games, over 140 basketball games, and a combined 30 baseball/softball games. I have poured my heart and soul into my duties. There is not much that I just totally put 110% into, and this was one of them. I felt like my heart was ripped out. I politely disagree with the management's decision and I am fighting to regain my job.

I feel that a local person should be announcing local games. Now, I am not nor will I not bash Crain Media or any of its employees, but I don't feel that by having an outsider to come in to do the Beebe games is right. I feel that it is a disrespect to the people of Beebe, alumni of the Beebe School District, and the district in general. One of the things that I prided myself on is my passion about Beebe sports. An outsider cannot produce the same passion as someone who is a resident and has been here for a while. An outsider cannot know the history and tradition of the school, nor will that individual know the coaches and the players like someone who is a resident would. Also, I have never been late to a broadcast, nor have I ever embarassed myself or the station by coming to a venue looking less than presentable. I have too much pride in myself and in my employers and school district to ever do that.

As far as the reasons for my dismissal, it was hinted to me that economics played a role. If so, I do understand, as the economy is in a recession. However, and I told this to management in an e-mail and a letter, that I would and will gladly do the games for FREE. No salary and no gas reimbursement at all. I am at a point financially where I don't need the announcing checks. If economics was the case, then I am more than willing to do what I can to help Crain Media. Another possible reason for my dismissal was an opinion that I posted on www.fearlessfriday.com back in February concerning the broadcast of another announcer in a post about the state basketball tournament. It was blunt, but it was not demeaning toward the announcer as a person. Despite my contention that I feel that I have the right to an opinion, I probably was too harsh, and for that, I humbly apologize towards that individual and to Crain Media. It was not, nor will it ever be my intention to ever hurt anyone like that. However, I still feel that I have the right to an opinion, as long as I do not slander or commit libel. However, there are ways to say something and ways not to say something. Once again, I apologize.

It is now August 5, one month from Beebe's season opener at Greenbrier. Will I be up in the press box? I sure hope so and I am optimistic that I will be back. I am posting this on my website, as to not take up space on Fearless Friday and not to offend anyone on there. I hope that all my friends on Fearless Friday will take the time to read this. I can use all the support I can to get back into the press box. I am more than available for comments and/or questions if you desire. I feel that the community of Beebe, plus all of my friends, need to know what happened from me personally, versus rumors or second hand information.

One last thing. One of the reasons why I love doing this job is because, I love being around the coaches and the kids. No amount of money in this world can equal the personal satisfaction and joy that I have received in watching these kids grow up and getting to know all of these families. Some of these individuals have a special place in my heart. I have even had one young person refer to me as a "father figure". Man, that's heavy. If that comment doesn't get you or touch your heart, then nothing will. Being around all these kids also fills a huge void in my life. You see, both of my children are deceased. My oldest, Terra, would've been a senior at Beebe High School this upcoming year. My youngest, whom my wife and I lost on Valentine's Day, 1999, would be going into the fourth grade. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about my two kids. I often think about whether or not Terra would've played basketball or softball or been in the band or to just be a student. In a way, being around these kids is a sort of therapy for me. Most holidays mean nothing to my wife and I. Anyways, as I have told the management of Crain Media, all I want is to be re-instated as the voice of the Badgers, nothing more. I do not want money, a fancy title, or anything like that. If any of the management from Crain reads this, please know that I hold no ill will towards you. Crain Media has done a lot of great things for me, however, I simply do not agree with the decision of July 19. I thank everyone for their support and I look forward to being back in the press box very soon!! Thanks everyone!!!!

Beebe's first ever Olympian

Michael Robertson, who was born in Beebe, but was schooled overseas, and who makes his residence in Beebe, qualified for the U.S. Olympic men's discus team at the U.S. Olympic trials in Eugene, OR on Sunday. Robertson, who competed on the college level at SMU and Stanford, finished second to qualify for the Beijing games, which will begin on August 8. Robertson becomes the first person EVER from Beebe to compete in either the summer or winter Olympic games. Congraduations Michael!! We'll be rooting for you!!

UPDATE:

Michael did not qualify for the finals in the discus, however, he still made all of us very proud. I'm sure that he will be back for the 2012 summer games in London.

Originally completed in 1999, it is a two story facility with a practice field on the inside, along with the coaches office, dressing rooms for both the junior and senior high, and a laundry room with whirlpool. The second floor contains the weight room, along with an office/changing room for the game officials. There are restrooms/showers on both floors. The fieldhouse was renamed Bill Pruitt Fieldhouse in honor of Coach Bill Pruitt. Coach Pruitt has been a coach/teacher at Beebe Public Schools since 1970. A 1965 graduate of Beebe High, Coach Pruitt started out as a senior high assistant/junior high science teacher. He then started teaching Agri and in 1981, became the Head Coach of Beebe Junior High. During his first tenure as BJHS Coach, Bill Pruitt saw a prosperous time in the program. In addition to numerous conference championships, Coach Pruitt enjoyed undefeated seasons in 1984, 1996, and 1997. Health concerns caused Coach Pruitt to retire after the 1997 season, however, he came back in 2004. During his second tenure, Coach Pruitt once again enjoyed success, and after winning another conference championship in 2005, he decided to retire again. However, in 2007, he was asked to come back to coach the 7th grade team. In addition to being a part-time coach and teacher, Bill Pruitt has been the color commentator for Beebe Badger football on radio for three seasons with Shane Smith. Bill, with his wonderful wife Linda, live in Searcy, where he helps to take care of the family farm. Bill has three grown sons and a number of grandchildren that he spends time with. He is also active in his church. I will post more pictures of Pruitt Fieldhouse when I get them.

First of all, I want to apologize for not posting anything last week. This has not only been a trying year for me, but a trying past few weeks. I can't say anything about it right now, but it has been stressful. I hate change, but I have gone through a lot since August. Hopefully, things will settle down a little later on. Once again, I apologize for not posting.

Let me bring you up to date on Badger football over the past couple of weeks. Last Friday, the Badgers exploded for 44 points and over 400 yards of total offense as Beebe defeated Crossett, 44-27. Sammy Williams had another outstanding game on offense, Roger Glaude was awesome in passing the football, but I was really impressed with junior Victor Howell. Victor, who didn't play football last year, snagged a 75 yard touchdown pass from Glaude. The most impressive stat was the fact that Beebe was 5-5 in 4th down conversions.

This past Friday, the Badgers traveled to Jacksonville to play North Pulaski. It was homecoming for the Falcons, but judging by the crowd, it looked like Beebe's homecoming as it appeared there were more Badger fans than Falcon fans. After the Badgers spotted North Pulaski seven points on an 89 yard screen pass, Beebe stormed back, or should I say, Sammy Williams stormed back. On the ensuing kickoff, Williams took the ball at the 15 and raced 85 yards for a touchdown. By the time Beebe kicked off to North Pulaski, the momentum had clearly shifted. By the time this game was over, the Badgers had rolled to a 40-13 win over North Pulaski. Williams had 284 yards on 27 carries with 4 touchdowns in addition to the touchdown on the kickoff return. In my opinion, this was probably the best individual performance by a Badger since the likes of Tony Lockhart.

This upcoming Friday lurks the biggest game of the season as the Monticello Billies make the long trip from Drew County. Van Paschal seemingly has righted the ship and has the Billies in contention for the 5A Southeast Conference championship. After starting the season 1-2 and running the offense out of the Spread, Monticello is 2-0 since returning to the Wing T. The Billies have some incredible athletes and no doubt has the Badger coaches worried. The initial weather forecast for next Friday is clear with a high temperature of 81. That should translate to standing room only on the home side of Bro Erwin Stadium in Beebe.

1. The Beebe Senior High Badgers improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the 5A Southeast with a 40-13 win over the North Pulaski Falcons.

2. Congradulations to Coach Bill Ashmore and his BHS Badger/Lady Badger golf teams as they swept the conference meet.

3. Speaking of the state golf tournament, the 5A girls state tournament was held recently. The Beebe Lady Badgers finished 6th in the state tournament, clearly their best showing in a long while.

Hey all, I'm Shane Smith, the voice of the Beebe Badgers and the author of this blog. Since 1999, I have had the privilege and the pleasure of being the voice of the Badgers.
